This collection consists of three ledgers. The first volume, a record of invoices for his general store for the period 1758 to 1779, records merchandise purchased from various consigners including Samuel Salisbury (1739- ), Stephen Salisbury (1746-1829), and John Hancock (1736-1793). The second volume consists mainly of debtor records and fees paid while Legate was justice of the peace. There is also a list of marriages performed by him from December 1770 to 1802. The third volume consists of two separate listings of accounts. The first (containing only eight leaves) lists accounts for the general merchandise firm of Joseph Miller ( - ) and William Sheppard ( - ) of Boston, Mass. It spans the years from 1761 to 1763, at which time it appears Miller left Boston to pursue new business ventures in New Providence, R.I. The more substantive part of the third volume (containing forty-eight leaves) consists of accounts for a general store in Leominster, Mass. It appears likely that the owner may have been Thomas Legate. The accounts cover the years from 1776 to 1783 and also include records of various Massachusetts lotteries. It is not clear how this volume changed hands.
