The collection contains two record books and a folder of correspondence and documents, 1854 to 1861. The octavo volume contains an abstract and record of the corporation's proceedings and includes a copy of the act of incorporation, a statement of objectives, original and amended bylaws, and abstracts of annual and special meetings. The latter refer to committee reports, elections of officers and teachers, and rules relating to scholarships and donations. The folio volume, 1854 to 1859, contains the minutes of the recording secretary, who was, first, E.A. Cummings ( - ), and second, Joseph M. Rockwood ( - ). The contents detail the financial aspects of operating the Institute, such as the original purchase of the building. There are also minutes of annual and special meetings which determined scholarship and subscription policies. The folder contains primarily letters, 1858 to 1859, written by D. Buckley Goddard ( - ) to Ira Moore Barton (1796-1867) concerning the Institute's suit against Goddard for non-payment of his subscription. There is also a list of court actions taken against other delinquent subscribers.

The Ladies' Collegiate Institute was founded in 1854 by a group of Baptist ministers in western Massachusetts, who set out to create a female seminary similar to Mount Holyoke. Ira Moore Barton (1796-1867) graduated from Brown in 1819 and Harvard Law School in 1822. In 1823, he married Maria Waters Bullard (1800-1883), the daughter of Artemas and Lucy White Bullard. Barton studied law with Sumner Barstow in Oxford and later with Levi Lincoln in Worcester. He served as a state representative and senator from Oxford in the period 1830 to 1834, before moving to Worcester in 1834.
