This collection contains eighty-two sermons written by Kittredge from 1833 to 1846 and delivered in Groton and Westborough, Mass. The sermons are numbered 33 to 470, though many sermons are missing and some include revisions. Each sermon lists the date and place when it was first delivered, and some include the dates and places where they were subsequently delivered.

The Transylvania Presbytery was organized by appointment of the synods of New York and Philadelphia. The Synod of New York made part of the Presbytery of Abingdon into the Transylvania Presbytery, which encompassed the district of Kentucky and the settlements on the Cumberland River. The Reverend David Rice, Adam Rankin, Andrew McClure, and James Crawford met at the Danville, Kentucky courthouse to organize the presbytery. Kittredge, Charles Baker, 1806-1884

Charles Baker Kittredge (1806-1884) attended Dartmouth College and was graduated from the Andover Theological Seminary in 1832. He was ordained to the Prebyterian ministry in 1833 and served as the pastor to the churches in Groton, Monson, and Westborough, Mass. He was also an assistant minister in the church in Worcester, Mass., from 1853 to 1856. Kittredge married Sarah Brigham (1815-1871) of Grafton, Mass., and they had eight children.
