This collection of papers, for the period 1797 to 1812, includes letters written to Howe from his family and friends in Belchertown while he was a student at Dartmouth, concerning family and local matters. Also included are letters, mostly personal, to Howe in Sutton from his family and various acquaintances. These papers also include the Worcester, Mass., court docket for the year 1812, at which time Howe was apparently clerk of the court. Two 1848 letters of Howe's nephew, Estes Howe (1814- ) are included in the collection.

Estes Howe (1780-1826) was born in Belchertown, Mass., and died in Albany, N.Y. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1800, and practiced law in Sutton, Mass., until 1815, at which time he moved to Albany. From the description of Papers, 1707-1812; 1848.
