Letters, 1857-1863.

These letters to his brother, Joseph, in Worcester, Mass., reminisce on his boyhood in Worcester and his career in the navy, describe his superintendency of the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. and the Naval School at Newport, R.I., and analyze the use of artesian wells. In a letter dated 3 March 1859, Blake admitted writing biographical sketches of naval figures in _Appleton's Cyclopaedia of Biography_, while his letter dated 4 January 1863 argued that the defeat of the Confederacy was inevitable. Another letter, written in 1858, complained of cost overruns in the construction of a ship.
