This collection of papers, covering the period 1763 to 1816, contains correspondence and legal notes of Francis Blake, as well as material pertaining to members of the Blake family. The latter includes deeds and business letters of John Barnard Blake ( - ), 1763, and James Barnard ( - ), 1772. There are letters, 1800-1801, written to Francis Blake by his father Joseph concerning financial matters and the sale of family property in Boston. The folder also includes two letters: one written to Francis Blake by a client, 1810, detailing a court case, and the other from a friend forwarding a set of books in 1812. There is also a small, unbound volume of legal notes, c. 1805, on a variety of undated cases in which Blake was professionally involved.

Francis Blake (1774-1817) was the son of Joseph Blake ( - ), an eminent merchant of Boston, Mass., and the father of George Smith Blake (1802-1871), for whom the AAS has a collection of letters, 1857-1863. Francis graduated from Harvard College in 1789, and read law with Mr. Sprague in Lancaster. After a brief practice in Rutland, Mass., Blake moved to Worcester, Mass., in 1802. Blake, Joseph, 1814-1888

Joseph Blake was born in Otisfield, Maine in January 1814. He studied theology in the Bangor Theological Seminary and was ordained pastor of the Congregational Church in Cumberland, Maine where he remained 18 years. He later became a botanist and donated his valuable herbarium to the University of Maine. He died at Andover, Mass. in May 1888. From the description of Correspondence 1837-1941 (bulk 1847-1888).
