Charles Allen (1797-1877), Worcester County judge and lawyer, was the son of Joseph Allen (1749-1827) and the brother of Samuel Allen (1789-1863). He attended Leicester Academy and studied at Yale College in 1811 and 1812. He served in the Massachusetts state legislature and the U.S. Congress and was an abolitionist and one of the founders of the Free Soil Party. From the description of Papers, 1828-1877. Peter Child Bacon (1804-1886) was born in Dudley, Mass., the son of Jepthah and Joanna Child Bacon. He graduated from Brown University in 1827, read law at the Yale College Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1830. He practiced law in Dudley and in Oxford, Mass., and transferred his practice to Worcester in 1844.
