Letters fall primarily into four periods (though there are also periodic letters that fall between or after these periods): 1) during 1903, when Eleanor was at Wellesley College and Van Wyck still a student in Plainfield, 2) during 1907-1909, when Eleanor was in France and Italy and Van Wyck in England, 3) during 1909-1911, when Eleanor was in California and Van Wyck in New York City and 4) 1926-1930, when Van Wyck was institutionalized for depression in various sanitariums.
