Austin Edward papers, 1826-1898.

Boston shipping merchant in partnership with J. Ingersoll Bowditch, importing goods from Calcutta and Manila, about 1858-66. Papers include: 5 letterbooks (1855-78); 13 ledgers (1826-97); 8 waste books (1848-97); 1 diary (1845-46); book of bills and invoices (1858-66); household bills (1893-98); and a notebook kept at Hong Kong (1834) listing exports, imports, and other commercial information. Papers of his brother Samuel Austin Jr. include his accounts with partner J.W. Lewis (1827); papers concerning his purchase of the Caleb Clark Estate in Brookline, Mass.; papers concerning his house at 45 Beacon Street, Boston, Mass.; and his estate account book and papers (1858-60). (Cont.) Also in collection are Union Club House accounts (1864-68); account book and papers of trust funds for Daniel and Hannah (Joy) Austin (1855); Henry Austin's bills (1897); Ann Lewis Trust Fund papers (1850); letters of Mary W. Lewis (1875-76); estate of William Austin accounts (1865-76); and records of the T Wharf (Boston, 1861-75, 3 vols.).

Campbellton was founded as the county seat of Campbell County around 1830. Campbellton had a couple thousand residents until Fairburn grew after the opening of the railroad. A Civil War battle was fought nearby (soldiers buried at a Methodist Church). By the 1870's the county seat moved to Fairburn and led to the disintigration of the town.
