Tanzania Records 1975-2005; 1988-2002

This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA mission activities in Tanzania. These records were generated during the course of documenting, monitoring, and publicizing projects, programs, and general updates pertaining to the efforts to practice the accompaniment model of mission whereby the ELCA's Division for Global Mission (DGM) walks with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) in mission efforts. The records are from 1976-2005, but the bulk date from 1988-2002. The date range precedes the existence of the ELCA because certain records were retained permanently by the area program director and as such were kept in this series for continuity purposes. This series comprises several accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of the program directors mentioned in this series' background: Carol J. Birkland, Lynda M. Tidemann, and Gaylord M. Thomas. Record types include correspondence, meeting minutes, project proposals, progress reports, audit reports, assistance applications, financial statements, budget proposals, project reports, agenda, exhibits, memoranda, and topical papers and resource materials. The series includes minutes, correspondence and financial reports related to the ELCT and include records that pertain to specific departments of the ELCT. It also includes records pertaining to work carried out by agencies coordinating the mission efforts of partner churches and the ELCT. The series is arranged into three subseries. Two of these subseries represent documentation of mission work related to Tanzania as represented by the Lutheran Coordination Service (LCS) and its successor Lutheran Mission Cooperation. LMC, as well as its predecessor LCS works as a means by which the ELCT coordinates its work with the mission agencies of churches in Denmark, the United States, Norway, Germany, and Finland. These records include proceedings and minutes from annual assemblies as well as minutes from executive committee meetings. The third subseries comprises records that document the ELCA's global mission partnership with the ELCT, as well as the work of ELCT dioceses as they partnered with the ELCA, as well as its various synods in the companion synod program. Subject matter for records includes educational partnerships, secondary as well as post-secondary education, community health programs, HIV/AIDS prevention, Stand With Africa efforts to combat hunger, and Operation Bootstrap Africa. Also included in this series are records related to ELCA missionaries and trip reports of ELCA program directors. While this series includes records related to specific governing councils, committees, and assemblies, it does not have complete sets of these minutes and in most cases, there are many gaps in the records. This caveat also holds true for church publications, audit reports, financial statements, and membership statistics. It appears that whatever was sent to DGM is what comprised the files. It cannot be ascertained if consistent efforts were made to fill in any gaps in the records.
