Records, 1903-1947.

The collection consists of two series: Correspondence dated 1904-1946, and Account Books dated 1903-1947. The correspondence series, originally received in seven letter cases was created by Wesley Clarence Crandall, S.I.O. Business Manager. It is arranged in reverse chronological order. The series of account books include 32 ledgers which document the financial transactions of the Marine Biological Association of San Diego, The Scripps Institution of Biological Research and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1903 to 1947. The books, arranged chronologically, also document many endowment funds and other gifts to the Institution by prominent individuals, various changes of SIO's property, buildings, grounds, seawall and pier during the period 1903-1947, and the scientific research done by SIO during World War I in cooperation with state and federal governments. The accounting records also document a number of other scientific projects conducted at Scripps.
