Mary Eudora Garoutte was born in Woodland, California. She began working in the California State Library in 1899. She was first placed in charge of bringing the California newspapers into order, and then of gathering other California material into a department of its own. She served as head of the California Section until 1933. At the time of her retirement, the section contained 13,000 volumes.
