Richard Malcolm Johnston was an author, lawyer, and educator. He was born near Pawellton, Georgia on "Oak Grove" plantation. He was law partners with Eli W. Baxter in Sparta, Georgia. In 1844, Johnston married Mary Frances Mansfield. He was elected chair of rhetoric and belles-lettres at the University of Georgia in 1857; he remained in Athens until 1861.
