James Monroe Smith was a Louisiana educator and university administrator. He was appointed president of Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College by Huey Long in 1931 and served in that capacity until 1939. During his tenure he spent lavishly on parties and household extravagances, appointed close associates to positions of power, and embezzled nearly a half a million dollars from L.S.U funds. Huey Long Pierce, Louisiana governor and United States senator, was born 30 August 1893, near Winnfield, Winn Parish, Louisiana, and died 10 September 1935. He studied law and practiced in Winnfield after 1915; served as Louisiana public service commissioner (1921-1926); was elected governor of Louisiana (1928); was elected to the United States Senate (1930); and organized the Share-Our-Wealth Society (1934) for which he had national support. Huey Pierce Long was born on August 30, 1893, in Winnfield, La. He briefly attended the University of Oklahoma School of Law in Norman, Okla., and later Tulane University Law School in New Orleans, La. He practiced law in Winnfield and later in Shreveport, La.
