Autobiography. 1881-1891.

Congregational minister and past corresponding secretary of the Illinois Home Missionary Association, the Rev. Bascom wrote about the significant events in his life as he recalled them. After he had attained the age of seventy, he decided to record in his own hand a 278 page account of his life for his family. He was a native of Lebanon, Connecticut but went west to join the "Yale Band" and served in various posts in Illinois.

According to his son, Henry Bascom delivered a funeral sermon on the death of Owen Lovejoy and a memorial sermon following the death of Abraham Lincoln. Approximately seventy-five letters of the Reverend Bascom's are included in the American Missionary Association Archives and there are letters of his in the Illinois file of the Archives of the American Home Missionary Society. Came to Princeton, Illinois in 1838 as minister of the Congregational Church and strong abolitionist. His home there was a stop on the Underground Railroad. He was elected to the state legislature in 1854 and to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1856, where he served five terms. He was the brother of slain abolitionist, Elijah Lovejoy.
