Bert Andrew Bandstra was born in Iowa on January 25, 1922. After graduating from high school, he enlisted as a seaman in the U.S. Navy in 1942, where he served in the Solomon Island and Okinawa campaigns, and received the Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and resumed his education. He graduated from Central College at Pella, Iowa in 1950 and from the University of Michigan School of Law in 1953.
