Papers, 1715-1725.

One volume containing "A Sacred Directory for a Justice of the Peace or Civil Ruler" transcribed by Congregational minister Hugh Adams in 1715. Adams anonymously sent this to the Mass. General Court to contest a decision relieving him of his right to preach at a church in Chatham, Mass. Also, a volume (and xerox copy) containing an autobiographical manuscript by Adams discussing controversial points of divinity, entitled "Narrative of Remarkable Instances of a Particular Faith and Answers of Prayers" (1724-1725), and a memoir of Adams written by Jeremy Belknap.

Jeremy Belknap was born in Boston on June 4, 1744. He received an AB from Harvard in 1762 and an AM in 1765. He became the minister of the First Congregational Church of Dover, New Hampshire in 1767, and later served as the minister of the Church in Long Lane, Boston. As a historian, Belknap published the History of New Hampshire and American Biography.
