American Society for Cell Biology records, 1960-1994.

The correspondence, meeting minutes, agendas, reports, accounting and membership files provide a clear view of the early development of the organization including its partnership with Rockefeller Institute in the publication of the Journal of Cell Biology, as well as the proposed merger between ASCB and the Society for Developmental Biology (SDB). The growth and expansion that led ASCB to open a National Office and begin publishing the American Society for Cell Biology Newsletter in 1978 and the journal Cell Regulation in 1987 is also clearly outlined. Of particular interest is the large volume of correspondence connected with the 1978 by-laws changes. The decision not to hold meetings in states that had not ratified the Equal Rights Amendment provoked a flurry of letter writing both for and against the decision. In addition, there are annual meeting and committee files such as those of the Program Committee, Public Policy Committee, the Education Committee, the Minorities Affaires Committee, and the Women in Cell Biology Committee. Among these files are extensive documents relating to a variety of educational programs and student scholarships. Of note is the summer program at the Marine Biology Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass.
