The Henry L. Stimson collection of World War I letters. 1911-1930.

The Henry L. Stimson collection contains eight autographed signed letters to "B. W." (Bronson Winthrop) which are various sizes and together make 28 pages. These letters date from November 17, 1911 to March 17, 1930. Stimson and Winthrop were boyhood friends. These long letters reflect their friendship. Most of the letters were written from the Western Front of France in 1918, when Stimson was a colonel of field artillery in the AEF. He describes the training centers and camps, and the great German offensive of March - April 1918 that the Germans hoped would finally achieve victory in the West. He was a sophisticated observer who had an unusual view of the fighting in France.
