ADS, 1810 December 23 : [London], to Spencer Perceval.

This document refers to the mental health of King George III. Spencer Perceval had, just three days earlier, introduced measures into the House of Commons regarding the proposed Regency, to replace the insane King. Symptoms of his illness had been detected as far back as 1765, but his final bout began when his favorite daughter, Amelia, died on November 2, 1810, and the King collapsed under the shock. This is the first official account of the King's mental illness known to the manuscript dealer. The succession of George, Prince of Wales, as Regent occurred on February 5, 1811.
