The collection consists of three letters. The letter of 17 July 1862 is written by Morton to General C.P. Buckingham concening the hiring of additional assistant surgeons for the army. The next letter dated 22 August 1862 is from Brigadier General Thomas John Wood written from Tennessee requesting additional troops from Indiana. The last letter is written from Georgia by Brigadier General Edward Moody McCook, dated 28 August 1864. He writes to Governor Morton to defend his honor and deny rumors that were printed in newspapers that his men and officers were drunk during a recent raid. There are typed transcripts for the last two letters.

Buckingham was born and raised in the Putnam section of Zanesville, Ohio, the only child of Ebenezer and Catharine Putnam Buckingham. He was a grandson of Rufus Putnam of American Revolutionary War fame and his wife Persis Rice Putnam. He graduated from the United States Military Academy sixth in the Class of 1829. Indiana lawyer, judge, and Republican politician. Morton served as the state's lieutenant governor in 1861, and as governor from 1861 to 1867.
