Richard Lee Mason journal, 1819. 1819.

An account of a journey on horseback from Philadelphia to St. Louis, October 4-December 13, 1819 by Richard Lee Mason. Mason was a Philadelphia physician who traveled to St. Louis passing through much of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois to receive a land grant for serving as surgeon in the War of 1812. He met with a few sick people, several criminals and the Kaskaskia Indians. His manuscript collection contains his 1819 journal in two versions: (1) Original manuscript version is in a notebook, 7 x 6 inches, with leather spine, paper covered boards, and lined paper pages. The top inch of the first page is missing. Pasted on the inside front board is an undated clipping, probably from the late 19th century, mentioning Mason's burial in 1824. The account is contained in 110 numbered pages, with other pages recording unrelated writings in other hands. (2) The account is also in printed form, said to have been published in the Springfield, IL Record (n.d., probably late 19th century). This version is in 14 pages of two-columned clippings pasted into a second notebook. The missing initial lines are indicated. The outside cover reads, "Composition book for Marshall Baker." The gift included a PDF copy of both versions on CD-R which was printed out and bound for use. The bound copy is with the manuscripts; the CD-R is in the donor file in the archives.
