ALS, 1836 May 3 : Washington, to General William R. Smith, Bedford, PA.

Buchanan writes while in the House of Representatives regarding a young man's prospects of moving west. He feels that "no enterprising and talented young man need entertain any apprehension of being unsuccessful in the West." He says that if a young man would settle in Wisconsin, "He would grow with the growth and strengthen with the strength of the country." This advice was for Smith's sons, and Buchanan suggests that they visit first to judge for themselves.
