Born in 1906, Newport began his career as designer/engineer in 1927 as an apprentice at Brunn and Company in Buffalo, New York. He went on to work brief stints at Floyd-Derham, Inc. (Rosemont, Pennsylvania), DuPont Motors (Wilmington, Delaware), Dietrich, Inc. (Detroit, Michigan), General Motors (Detroit), and Studebaker Corporation (South Bend, Indiana); served as chief designer for Duesenberg, Inc. from 1933 to 1935. From the description of J.
