The Langer collection is extensive. Included in this section, Series I, Pre-Senate Papers, 1900-1941, are materials documenting programs and conflicts within the Nonpartisan League's state program of socialism which included the owning and management of state industries (1918-1921). Also in this Series are materials from Langer's gubernatorial years revealing problems of the depression in North Dakota (1921-1941), drought, early New Deal programs, and conflicts with the Roosevelt administration.

The Farmers' Nonpartisan Political League was organized in North Dakota in 1915 by Arthur C. Townley and other North Dakota Socialist Party members.
