Holograph letter signed, Washington, D.C., June 27, 1877 to Governor Alexander H. Rice, regarding an invitation to Boston on the occasion of a presidential visit. Porter expresses regret that he was on vacation in Warm Springs, Va., when the letter arrived.

He was instrumental in Farragut's capturing of New Orleans in 1862 when he set off 20,000 bombs to destroy the Confederate forts, Jackson and Saint Philip.
