Bryher (1894-1983) was a British author best known for her historical novels, including The Fourteenth of October (1952) and Coin of Carthage (1962), and her autobiographical writings. She also established Close-Up (1927-33), the first periodical devoted to film. Born Winifred Ellerman, she married Robert MacAlmon in 1919. Hilda Doolittle, or H.D., (1886-1961) was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on September 10, 1886. She has been described as a premier Imagist poet although her greatest body of work can be traced to later in her life, during and directly after World War II.
