Bryher (1894-1983) was a British author best known for her historical novels, including The Fourteenth of October (1952) and Coin of Carthage (1962), and her autobiographical writings. She also established Close-Up (1927-33), the first periodical devoted to film. Born Winifred Ellerman, she married Robert MacAlmon in 1919. Hilda Doolittle, or H.D., (1886-1961) was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on September 10, 1886. She has been described as a premier Imagist poet although her greatest body of work can be traced to later in her life, during and directly after World War II. She spent most of her life living, traveling and keeping up with her friend and fellow writer Winifred Bryher. Hilda Doolittle was born in Bethlehem, Pa., in 1886. Doolittle made a name for herself as a poet, playwright and novelist.
