Weld Company correspondence, 1833-1851.

Correspondence of the Weld Co., commission merchants of Boston, Mass., with Stetson and Avery, F.M. Weld and Co., and John D. Wilson, New Orleans commission and forwarding merchants. Largely written by New Orleans merchants to the Boston offices of Weld and Co., the letters concern shipments of commodities such as molasses, mackerel, cotton bagging, candles, tea, flour, and pig lead to and from New Orleans and Boston, Mass. Other letters describe the possibility of opening up cotton trade with Havana, Cuba; the enthusiasm of New Orleans citizens upon the arrival of General Andrew Jackson to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans; and preparations being made by the city of New Orleans to mourn the death of President William Henry Harrison in 1841. Letters by Joseph Fitch address the political controversy in New Orleans following the Compromise of 1850; New Orleans business conditions; and French, Spanish, and English buying in the cotton market there. Included among the correspondence are scattered bills of lading for goods sent by ship, a financial statement, and a letter by Jacob Barker concerned with the financial condition of the Weld Co.
