Zephaniah Bliss account book, 1771-1827.

Norwich, Connecticut shoemaker and tanner's accounts for making, taping and mending shoes for his neighbors, including several slaves, at least one free black, and Native Americans. He also sold bushels of hair and charged for curing and tanning leather. He was paid with calf and sheep skins, tools, bark, rum, spinning, and rye. In 1789 the hand seems to change, although shoe making is still the primary job of the writer. However, there are entries for surveying land, making cider, carting goods for people, selling trees, and plowing. The writer also began renting his shop at about the same time and the number of shoes mended or made reduce significantly.
