John C. Perry was born in Massachusetts in about 1871, or possibly on December 14, 1872. By 1896 he had moved to Los Angeles with his wife Esther and worked first as a bookkeeper for Land of Sunshine Magazine, and later as secretary and treasurer for Out West Magazine. After 1907 he worked as an orchardist and, while briefly maintaining a business address in Los Angeles, moved to Highland in San Bernardino County.
