Courier company receipts, 1863-1870.

Subseries (1) consists of three receipt books, May 1863-July 1865, for goods sent from the State Agency in Washington by Gardiner Tufts to families of soldiers primarily in Massachusetts, via Harnden Express, a private courier company. Subseries (2) contains receipt books, June 1863-Apr. 1870, for monies or personal papers (with valuation given) sent by Tufts to families of soldiers in the field, via Harnden Express. Monies were most likely sent at request of soldiers, representing pay or bounties, or on behalf of deceased soldiers. Post-war entries are often addressed to the adjutant general's office or to Surgeon General Dale, and chiefly consist of muster or other soldier rolls.
