To fulfill their responsibilities for providing public bus, trolley, trackless trolley, rapid transit, and (since 1964) commuter rail services to the Boston metropolitan area, the MTA and MBTA have been administered respectively by a board of public trustees and board of directors, both served by a general manager. Series has been created by the general manager's office to facilitate and document fulfillment of its responsibilities, and in its present state reflects activities during a period of significant transit network growth and agency reorganization. Files contain memorandums, correspondence, and reports; also maps, plans, blueprints, and photographs.
