Arleigh Albert Burke, U.S. Naval Officer, was born near Boulder, Colorado on 19 October, 1901. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1923 and served in the Navy until his retirement in 1961. Draper Laurence Kauffman was born August 4, 1911, in San Diego, California. He received his commission as Lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve then transferred to the U.S. Navy as a commander in 1946. He advanced through grades to the rank of rear admiral in 1961, then served as Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy from 1965 to 1968. Kauffman died on August 18, 1979.
