Episcopal Diocese of Georgia records, 1873-2000.

The Episcopal Diocese of Georgia Records, 1873-2000, primarily consists of the clerical and administrative records of the Diocese, although some information concerning individual churches, clergy, and members is available. There are thirteen series documenting the activities, programs, and missions of the Diocese: Administrative; Commissions, Committees, and Councils; Bishops' Files; Leadership; Individual Churches and Convocations; Parochial Reports; Surveys; Vital Records; Missions and Ministry; Publications; Religious Education and Services; Property; and Financial. The collection also contains two series of visual materials: Church in Georgia and Architectural Drawings. The bulk of these series was amassed for the Episcopal publication, Church in Georgia. Most of the folders in this collection retain their original names. In addition, the collection includes 26 microfilm rolls containing some of the original records in this collection, 1750-1942. A separate inventory is available for the microfilm.

The presence of the Episcopal Church in Georgia began with the arrival of Anglican minister Dr. Henry Herbert who accompanied the first colonists in 1733. By 1840, the Protestant Episcopal Church in Georgia was a small diocese with six parishes and a bishop. By 1906 there were 27 parishes and 108 missions, necessitating the Diocese of Georgia to divide into upper and lower operational divisions.
