American journalist and politician Watterson (known as "Marse Henry"), here describes his visit of several days with Samuel Tilden, sometime between 1880 and 1886, when Tilden died. Watterson had been a supporter of Tilden in his candidacy for President against Rutherford B. Hayes. Here Watterson finds his friend Tilden in renewed health, and says of him: "I never knew a man more entirely frank in his intercourse with his friends than this sage of Greystone."
