Typescripts of letters of portrait painter Mather Brown to his aunts Catharine and Mary Byles of Boston, Mass. A few letters from Catharine and Mary, and extracts from letters of Brown's cousin Mather Byles are also included. Brown, who settled in England in the 1780s, described his work on various paintings, the conditions of life for painters, his friendship with King George III, the hard economic conditions that prevailed after 1800, and his frustrations in trying to convince his sister, Peggy Brown Clark, to share the inheritance she received from the estate of their father, Gawen Brown. Letters from the painter Thomas C. Hofland, with whom Brown lived; his wife, the writer Barbara Hofland; and from Brown's executor, Shirley Forster Woolmer, describe Brown's illness and death. Copies of his will and accounts of his estate are also included.
