Diary and sketchbook of Thomas K. Wharton. The diary begins with a chronicle of a journey Wharton took for health reasons with his wife Emily from New Orleans to Massachusetts, where Wharton had relatives. Wharton describes the trip by steamboat from New Orleans to Illinois; passage by ship over the Great Lakes to Buffalo, N.Y.; a visit to Niagara Falls; and his stay in Boston, Framingham, Saxonville, and Quincy, Ma., where he occupied himself with sketching, boating, and visiting kin. He later reports of his return journey to New Orleans by boat down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The New Orleans portion of the diary describes the yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans in 1853-1854, construction work on the New Orleans custom house, social life in New Orleans, and the outbreak of the Civil War. The diary is illustrated with occasional pen and ink drawings, mostly of nature subjects sketched during Wharton's sojourn in Massachusetts, and includes scattered newspaper clippings of newspaper articles that describe Wharton's election as a member of the Smith Artillery under Major M.L. Smith and the explosion of a powder mill at Gretna, La., an event that Wharton describes in the diary.
