Written to journalist West, Jeffers explains in detail the themes and motives of the story "Tamar". He says: "Now to defend the theme. Of primitive motives--hunger, fear of death, etc. -- sexual desire is surely the most poetized and dramatized in the normal consciousness ... incest seems to me a fairly appropriate symbol of the immoderate racial introversion which needs pointing out and protesting against."
