James Bryce, 1st Viscount Bryce, was a British writer, historian and statesman. Born in Belfast, he was educated at Glasgow University and later Oxford, he practiced law briefly, but returned to Oxford as a professor of civil law. He served in Parliament for many years, and held several government positions, including Ambassador to the United States.
