Special order no. 218, 1863 Aug. 4, Headquarters, 1st Military District (Charleston, S.C.)

Note ordering that two officers and thirty men "picked for their skill as marksmen & for practice on the creeks and marshes" be detailed from the Eutaw Regiment to report to Fort Johnson [on James Island (S.C.)], by order of Brig. Gen. [Roswell Sabine] Ripley. The men would be sent from Secessionville to Fort Johnson "by wagon or ambulance, if possible" and provided with one days rations and "armed with the best arms and provided with forty rounds of ammunition." This "Copy by Telegraph" was signed by W[illia]m F. Nance.
