Dwight-Howard papers, 1673-1902, bulk: 1730-1860.

Correspondence, deeds, and misc. papers of the Dwight, Howard, and Hayward families of Springfield, Mass. Included are deeds to land in Springfield, and letters of Col. John Worthington and his son-in-law Thomas Dwight, a Mass. state legislator and congressman. Dwight's letters to his wife Hannah, his brother Josiah, and others, describe social life, politics, duels, and fashions in Boston during the 1790s and in Washington during his congressional term from 1803-5. Also discussed are the theater and fires in Boston, the Louisiana Purchase, and a meeting with Pres. Thomas Jefferson in 1803. Includes 3 letters from William Eaton, 2 written while he led an expedition against Tripoli in 1805. (Cont) Howard family papers include letters of Harvard student Bezaleel Howard, later pastor of the First Church of Springfield, including a few letters to Benjamin Lincoln (1782-3). Also, letters of his son Charles Howard, his daughter-in-law Elizabeth Dwight Howard, and his granddaughters Lucinda, Catharine, Sophia, and Elizabeth Howard.
