Hugh Moss Comer Festschriften and scrapbook, 1882-1900

This collection contains a scrapbook created by Hugh Moss Comer and includes newspaper clippings relating to his businesses in and around Savannah, Georgia. Those businesses include Bates and Comer, cotton merchants, H. M. Comer and Company, cotton merchants, Comer, Hull, and Company, fertilizer merchants, Savannah Hotel Company, Savannah Construction Company, and Bibb Manufacturing. As Comer served as president of the Central of Georgia Railroad, there are also clippings included that relate to railroad business as well. This collection also contains a memorial book (or Festschriften) created to commemorate Comer's contributions to the Central of Georgia Railroad. A commemorative medal was donated with this collection and has been removed to the artifacts collection; item A-1253-021.

Hugh Moss Comer (1842-1900) was a Savannah, Georgia businessman. His businesses included Bates and Comer, cotton merchants, H. M. The Central Rail Road and Canal Company was organized in 1833 by a group of Savannah businessmen. In 1835, its name changed to Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia. The company was sold and reorganized as the Central of Georgia Railway in 1895. IN 1971, the name changed to Central of Georgia Railroad.
