Originally titled "In Memory of Olivia Susan Clemens 1872-1896," Twain renamed this manuscript "A Family Sketch." Here he found an outlet for his profound sorrow by writing the story of his family. Numerous corrections and emendations give intriguing glimpses into Twain's style and attest to his striving for perfection in his work.
