James Robert Matthews papers, 1820-1828.

Volume (42 p.) containing Matthews' diary (1820, Jan. 1 - March 19, June 15 - Sept. 20) reporting upon military and political events in Spain during the Revolution of 1820; includes references to Manuel Freire and Rafael del Riego y Nunez. Volume also contains Freire's proclamations of March 9, 12, 1820, about the constitution and diary entries (1822 April 2-5) for a visit to Gibraltar and to John Pitt, Second Earl of Chatham. Also letters from Henry Wellesley, First Baron Cowley, (1820 Feb. 1), and Robert Stewart, Second Marquis of Londonderry (1822, June 29). There is also a letterbook (1822 July 30 - 1828 Feb 16) with copies of Matthews' responses to orders and dispatches, some accompanied byconsuliar account reports, along with personal letters addressed to his financial and estate managers.
