Papers, 1840-1870.

Papers of F. Gordon Dexter relating to his work as an agent for Russell and Co., Samuel Hooper and Co., William Appleton and Co., and William Austin and Co., merchants doing business in China and India. The bulk of the collection consists of financial papers including invoices; bills of sale; bills of lading for the ships Arragon, Nabob, and Radius; disbursements; and accounts. Correspondence between Dexter and other merchants exposes the vulnerability of the tea market to changing taste in teas and to civil unrest in China. Letters from Dexter's family and friends bring news of family and of Boston.
