Chiefly letters from W.P. Russell, of Charleston, S.C., consisting of business correspondence re real estate on Hasel Street in Charleston. Other correspondents include W.P. Russell, Jr., and John B. Cleveland. William P. Russell and William P. Russell, Jr., are listed in the 1882 Charleston, S.C., city directory as employed with Charleston Rice Milling Co., located at the east end of Hasel Street. Letterhead stationery, with letter of W.P. Russell, Jr., 18 June 1880, identifies W.P. Russell as an architect located at 2 Hasel Street. Among the items of interest is letter, 17 Nov. 1881, from W.P. Russell (of Charleston Rice Milling Co., East End Hasel Street, Charleston, S.C.), discussing his prospects for success in business despite the fact that his neighbors, "Bennett's Rice Mill, have fought me with all their aristocratic family influence and money, with the most able legal help in the state, to shut up our canal...."; and letter, 10 Dec. 1882, from John B. Cleveland, of Duncan & Sanders, Attorneys At Law, Spartanburg, S.C., soliciting Whitney to invest in Pacolet Manufacturing Company in Spartanburg County, S.C.
