Parke family papers, 1817-1949 (bulk 1828-1945).

The collection consists of papers of the Parke family from 1817-1949. The papers include early family records (1817-1828) consisting of family correspondence, legal documents, and genealogical materials. The bulk of the collection consists of papers of Pennsylvania lawyer Benjamin Parke (1838-ca. 1856), including letters, reminiscences, clippings and parts of a manuscript autobiography; papers of Episcopal minister Robert Nathan Parke, including an autobiography, a scrapbook of clippings regarding his work in the Protestant Episcopal Church (1870's-1880's), sermons (ca. 1898), family correspondence, and memorabilia. The collection also contains papers of Benjamin Parke Avery consisting of correspondence from California mainly to his wife (1861-1874), other family letters, genealogical information, and clippings relative to his assignment in China; scrapbooks and papers of Eunice Parke Detweiler and daughter Eunice Detweiler Parke (Mrs. Frederick Huntington Parke), mainly concerning their lives in St. Petersburg, Russia (1889-ca. 1902), where Frederick Huntington Parke was working; photographs and correspondence from Frederick H. Parke Jr., to his sister Theodosia Parke (1945-1947) concerning the U.S. Army and World War II in the Pacific.

Avery was a prominent Calif. newspaperman and pioneer born in New York City. He established and ran the Hydraulic Press and, with a partner, the Appeal. He served as state printer, 1861-1863. He was the editor of the San Francisco Evening Bulletin, and of the Overland Monthly, 1872-1874. He also served as United States Minister to the Chinese Imperial Court, 1874-1875.
