John Hill Hewitt papers, 1824-1888.

The collection consists of papers of John Hill Hewitt from 1824-1888. The papers, containing both published and unpublished manuscripts, includes plays; melodrama and operetta librettos; prose works; poetry; and music, particularly ballads. The papers also include autobiographical materials and notebooks; correspondence; and miscellaneous notebooks and scrapbooks, many of the latter filled with clippings by and about Hewitt. The collection documents Hewitt's multifaceted talents and reflects the tastes, manner, and style of nineteenth century American society.
