Lucius Franklin Brown papers, 1858-1863 [microform].

The collection consists of a microfilm copy of typescripts of 29 letters and an appendix composed of a summary of Brown Flowers family history; excerpts from letters, 1847-1860, in which Lucius is mentioned; excerpts from Olivia Maria Brown's diary, 1862; a biographical essay on General Henry B. Carrington; a sketch on the 18th Regiment, Ohio Infantry; and a brief note on "The Band of the 18th." Letters are from Brown to his sister, Olivia Maria Brown, and two letters are from her to him; two letters are from his sister, Virginia Flowers, to him. Photographs are of Brown's fiancee, Emmaline McClelland, and of General Henry B. Carrington; drawings are camp scenes drawn by Brown. The biographical essay is about Carrington. Excerpts are from the 1862 diary of Olivia Maria Brown.

Clement Laird Vallandigham was born July 29, 1820, in New Lisbon, Ohio (now Lisbon, Ohio), to Clement and Rebecca Laird Vallandigham. His father, a Presbyterian minister, educated his son at home. In 1841, Vallandigham had a dispute with the college president at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He was honorably dismissed, but he never received a degree. Edwin M. Stanton, the future Secretary of War under President Lincoln, was Vallandigham's close friend before the Civil War....

Lucius Franklin Brown, Union soldier, was born in 1839, and died 10 October 1863. He served with the 18th Ohio Infantry in Tenessee. During the Battle of Chickamauga he was wounded six times, taken to a hospital, and taken prisoner when the hospital was captured. He was hospitalized five days later and soon died. Early life Carrington was born in Wallingford, Connecticut. An ardent abolitionist in his youth, he was graduated from Yale University in 1845. He was professor of natural science and Greek at the Irving Institute in Tarrytown, New York from 1846 to 1847. Under the influence of the school's founder, Washington Irving, he subsequently wrote Battles of the American Revolution, which appeared in 1876.
