Thomas Henry Haden diaries, 1896-1946.

The collection consists of the diaries of Thomas Henry Haden contained in 37 bound volumes with entries between October 21, 1896 and October 13, 1946. The great bulk of the material consists of descriptions of Haden's daily routines, including his teaching duties in Japan and at Emory University (1921), the Methodist Episcopal, South and the Canadian Union joint sponsorship of Kwansei Gakuin (1910), work on establishing a Christian university in Japan (1910-1915), travel to see missions in Korea and China (1923), and his retirement years (1940-1946). The collection also includes a manuscript of a writing on the history of Protestant Christian missions in Japan from 1859 to 1883.

Thomas Henry Haden, educator and Methodist missionary, was born 14 February 1863, in Palmyra, Virginia, and died 3 November 1946, in McIntosh, Florida. In 1895, Haden received his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Vanderbilt University, married Jennie Conwell, and left for Japan to begin a career as a missionary for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He was assigned to the Tadotsu Circuit but became a professor (1896-1940) and dean of theology at the Kwansei Gakuin (University) in Kobe, Japan...
